This is a fine example of a Winchester Fourth Model 1866 Carbine manufactured in 1884. The carbine has the iron buttplate found on late production Model 1866 rifles and carbines. The 20" round barrel has two barrel bands with a block iron rear sight mounted behind the upper band and a late style folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the receiver has a staple-mounted saddle ring. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860". Between the lower barrel band and the rear sight, The caliber: "44 R.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "44 CAL." is inscribed on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "165711" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap door and the butt trap contains the correct, four-piece, jointed steel cleaning rod. The carbine has a blued barrel, magazine and bands, casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate and varnished walnut stock and forearm.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 165711
Condition: Fine. The carbine has been covered with an old coat of protective varnish. The varnish gives the barrel, magazine and bands a dark patina and makes it difficult to determine the amount of original blue finish, but estimate it to be 30%. There are several small areas of pitting on the top of the barrel near the Winchester legend. The barrel markings are clear. The brass receiver is in excellent condition with sharp edges, tight side plate joints and minimal dents or scratches. The lever and hammer have a dark mottled gray patina. The buttplate has a dark patina with some rough spots below the varnish. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition and have only a few, very minor scratches and handling marks. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1866 Carbine Saddle Ring.
