Fine Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This is an example of 1 of approximately 31,000 First Model 1873s, the vast majority of which were rifles. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/King's improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight, the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" and the serial number is on the lower tang directly behind the lever catch. The dust cover is held in place with grooved rails on either side of the receiver and the dust cover has the finely checkered oval panel. Blade front sight integral to the barrel band and two leaf folding rear sight. Saddle ring and stud on the left rear of the receiver, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate, with compartment (cleaning rod not included). Consignor information from Cody verifies carbine configuration, that it was received in the warehouse on December 14, 1886 and shipped to order number 8522 on March 8, 1887. (A late shipment as the carbine was produced earlier.)

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 40% original blue with the balance turned a smooth mottled dark gray brown patina. The receiver retains 50% original blue finish with some minor spotting and areas of brown patina. The hammer, lever and buttplate have a smooth dark mottled patina. The wood is also fine and full dimension with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The markings are clear. The action is excellent and tight as a new gun.
