Fine U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle

This is a fine example of an original Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured circa 1869. The top of the breechblock is stamped "1869/Eagle Head/Crossed Arrows/U.S.", the underside of the breechblock is stamped with a sub-inspector "H" proof. The lock plate is marked with the standard marking and is dated "1863". The left side of the barrel and receiver are serial numbered "5943". The barrel is fitted with the original barrel bands marked with a "U" and it has a fixed front sight. Mounted with the full length walnut stock with a "U.S." marked buttplate tang and is fitted with the correct two-piece trigger guard. The stock has four separate cartouches stamped on the left flat, two with the initials "ESA" and two with "FWL". Comes with an original cleaning rod.

Fine overall with armory bright polish present on the various metal parts, and the receiver and breechblock retain 40% of the oil quenched black finish, mostly in the protected area. The lock plate and hammer retain 10% case colors with the balance a silvery/gray patina. The re-oiled stock is also fine with a nice original dark brown color overall showing minor light handling marks on the sides, and a little rounding of the edges of the stock flats around the lock plate and escutcheons. The proofmarks are clear and distinct with some light scratches in between the cartouches. A very nice example of a early Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle.
