1p, 8.5" x 11" on letterhead of R. H. Paul, Sheriff of Pima County, Tucson, AZ, 12 Oct. 1883. Addressed to Wells, Fargo superintendent in San Francisco about a reward offered for the capture of Charley Hensley and Jack Elmer for the robbery on 10 Aug. 1883 of a W. F. & Co. stage and murder of one of their representatives near Riverside, AT. The robbers got away with $2620, and W.F. & Co. offered $300 for each man, and the Governor added $1000 (total $1600 - almost as much as they stole!). They were apparently captured in Pima County. Paul is requesting that the reward money be sent to him to be divided among those who were claiming it.

Also included is the Wells, Fargo reward circular sent to lawmen in the region with a description of the crime and criminals. 5.5" x 8.5".

Robert Havlin Paul (1830-1901) was reportedly a fearless and able detective. Born in Lowell, MA, his first position was as a cabin boy on a whaler at the age of 12. By the age of 19 he made his way to California, where he served in various law enforcement roles, including Wells Fargo agent, for the next 30 years. He was sent to Arizona in 1878, and elected sheriff of Pima County in 1881. He went to Colorado to bring the Earps back in 1882, but was unsuccessful in locating them. He became a special officer for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1889, and a U.S. Marshal in 1891. He retired four years later, a career spanning nearly half a century. (See also lots 391-393)
