This is an example of one of approximately 20,600 percussion carbines produced by Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York circa 1862 to 1865. This carbine is a 54 caliber percussion, single shot with a falling block breech mechanism. The lock is marked "STARR ARMS CO./YONKERS, N.Y." and the upper tang is marked "STARRS PATENT/SEPT. 14TH 1858" directly behind the loading port. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is marked "STARR ARMS CO YONKERS N.Y.", with the matching serial number appearing on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm and right side of the locking block. There is a "P" on the underside of the barrel at the breech. The left side of the barrel at the breech is marked "L.A.B." and the left side of the rear sight base is marked with the letter "B". Fixed front and two leaf rear sights, saddle ring and staple mounted on the left rear of receiver, brass single barrel band marked with a "U" and "B" , "B" on the rear of the lower tang and on the buttplate tang. The barrel and lower tang are blue, with casehardened finish on the remaining parts and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock. The top of the stock directly ahead of the buttplate tang is stamped with "L.A.B." and there is a boxed cartouche on the left wrist. In government tests of the Starr carbine, it rated higher than the better known Sharps carbines. Fine. The barrel has traces of finish with the balance having a smooth brown patina and the remaining parts have a smooth mottled gray with flashes of original case colors in protected areas. The barrel band and buttplate have a bright appearance. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
