Fine Spencer Sporting Rifle
Very few sporting rifles were made by Spencer and educated estimates are around 1,800 produced. The action first went into production in 1860 and as soon as the Civil War started all resources were devoted to turning out rifles and carbines for the Civil War. The matching serial number is also stamped on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. Marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860." on top of the receiver. The assembly number "61" is stamped on various parts including the barrel, lever, and breechblock. Block front sight and folding leaf ladder rear sight, with a tang mounted peep sight also marked with the assembly number. The peep sight does not have graduating marks. Smooth straight grip stock with pewter tipped forearm secured by two screws. "G37" is stamped behind the trigger. Nothing is known about this marking at time of description.

Fine. The barrel retains approximately 75% thinning original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The frame retains approximately 40% original case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina. The buttplate has a smooth gray patina with some pin point pitting. The wood is very good with the exception of a minor crack located on the wrist and forearm, along with some minor dings and scratches overall. There has been an overcoat of varnish applied to the buttststock. Mechanically fine.
