Fine Signed Japanese Tanto with Sheath
According to notes provided by the consignor, the signature on the blade is that of Masasane, a smith active in the Eiroku period (1558-1570). Koto-style blade, measuring 12" in length with a faint temper line and a silver collar. Blackened bronze tsuba, oval with smooth sides, with a pair of gilt copper spacers. Black cord wrapped hilt, with gilt coiled dragon menuki, blackened bronze fuchi and kashira, the former with gilt birds, dragon and wave, the latter half finished in silver with vine work. Tang is signed on the left side, with two mekugi holes. Black lacquered saya, with alternating bands of smooth and rough texture and a kozuka with 4 1/2" blade, blackened brass grip and gilt accented scene of men drinking.

Condition: Very fine. Some light spotting is present on the blade, with a few dings on the edge and spine. Minor dings are present on the collar, and the color of the bronze fittings are excellent, with minimal wear. Kosuka shows a dark patina on the blade, with the drinking scene in excellent condition. Saya is good, with some cracks.
