Fine Remington New Model Navy Revolver Factory Cartridge Conversion
This is an example of a Remington New Model Navy Revolver that was converted by the factory to breech loading metallic cartridge configuration. Many of these revolvers were not actually converted from percussion revolvers but were assembled as metallic cartridge revolvers using the combination of percussion and metallic cartridge components. This revolver is the "Improved Design" conversion with a loading gate and ejector rod in addition to the modified frame, cylinder and recoil shield. The revolver is factory nickel-plated with a casehardened hammer and two-piece, varnished walnut grips. The bottom of the barrel is stamped with the percussion serial number, "42508" followed by the conversion assembly number "890". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858. MARCH 17. 1865./REMINGTON & SONS.ILLION.NEWYORK. U.S.A./NEW MODEL" in three lines.

Very fine. The revolver retains approximately 80% of the original nickel-plated finish. Nearly all of the plated finish is present on the barrel and frame with some flaking and light pitting on the underside of the barrel near the muzzle and on the left side of the frame at the junction with the grips and on the butt. The cylinder has about 50% of the plated finish with some scattered pitting on the sides and face. The brass trigger guard retains about 40% of the nickel-plating. And there is some scattered flaking on the ejector rod and percussion loading lever. The two-piece grips are in very good condition with about 70% of the varnish finish and some light handling marks. The revolver action is tight and functions well. This is a very fine example of a Remington factory cartridge conversion of a New Model Navy percussion revolver.
