Fine Remington-Keene Bolt Action Rifle

The Keene bolt action system was Remington's first attempt at producing a repeating rifle to compete with the lever action Winchesters. These were manufactured from 1880-1884 with a total production of approximately 5,000. This model was the first magazine fed rifle produced by Remington. It has a loading gate on the bottom of the rifle in front of the trigger guard. The top of the bolt is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y./PATENT FEBY. 24. MCH 17. 1874 JAN. 18/SEP. 26. 1876 MCH 20 JULY 31 1877". The left rear of the receiver is marked ".433" vertically. All blue finish, bright bolt and casehardened hammer mounted on the end of the bolt. Blade front sight dovetailed into the front barrel band and adjustable folding ladder rear sight graduated 1,2,3 for use with the horizontal notch and 4-10 on the right arm for use with the slide when the leaf is in the vertical position. Mounted with a smooth one-piece straight grip walnut half stock with iron forend cap and carbine style buttplate. There is a sling swivel on the buttstock and forend cap.

Fine. The rifle retains 70% original blue finish with areas thinning to a smooth brown patina, scattered wear and a number of minor scratches. The hammer shows traces of original dark case colors with a mottled brown patina on the balance. The stock is good with a 3 inch minor crack on the right side at the receiver, a couple of minor gouges on the left wrist and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
