Fine Joseph Jourdain Tomahawk,
circa 1845-55. Hand-forged steel, with Jourdain's signature inlaid brass crescent, decorated with a series of six tiny "punches"; the other side decorated with a series of touch marks forming a large cross. The blade 7.5" in length, 2.75" at its widest point, the tall pipe bowl 1.5" in height. Transversely flattened handle with carved lobes near the hatchet end, and decorated on one side with eight hand-made brass tacks, with evidence of five additional tacks, now lost, and pierced for a suspension. The hatchet and handle with rich patina. Jourdain, born at Three Rivers, Canada in 1780 moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1796 and worked at the Indian Agency there until 1834, transferring in that same year to Winnebago Rapids near the Little Lake des Morts. He remained here until his death in 1866 (Peterson 1971:49; 132). Deaccessioned from the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Handle with tight, old crack, with evidence of repair with pitch or some similar substance. Old accession number "1620" in red enamel on handle.
