Jade has always held a special place in Chinese culture. From ancient times its value has been considered to be greater than gold or silver.Beginning in the Neolithic period, the stone was carved into shapes such as discs or square tubes and placed on the body of the deceased within the tomb.

The Hongshan Culture was a Neolithic culture in northeastern China.Named after a site discovered in 1935 in Hongshan District,Chifeng,Hongshan sites have been found in an area stretching from Inner Mongolia to Liaoning and Hebei, and date from 3500 - 2500 BC,known for jade, copper, perhaps bronze working.

The pig dragon is a type of jade artifact from the Hongshan culture of China. The iterm shows a representation of the northeastern pig dragons, this rather mysterious object may have a connection to the Sumerian serpent that swallows its own tail, symbolizing infinity and eternity. The form is characterised by a simplified head of dragon which almost touches the end of the tail, forming a slot in the ring, though in this case the tail and chin are not completely separated.
