Estimate: $13000 - 19000
Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1861
Manufactured in 1863. The revolver features very nice broad floral scroll and punch dot engraving in the style of Master Engraver Gustave Young. The engraving covers the rear and upper sides of the barrel, frame, trigger guard bow, butt along with the upper and lower back strap. There are floral patterns amid the scroll designs and the characteristic wolf head hammer engraving. The top of the back strap has a shell design. The top of the hammer is marked with three small dots which are the markings of Gustave Young's indicating that he worked on this revolver for three 10 hour days to complete it. The top of the barrel is marked "--ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA--" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT" in a decorative panel. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene as well as "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" on the forward edge. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with the number "2" and the left rear "36 CAL". The bottom of the barrel directly ahead of the loading lever cut out is marked with the letter "D". The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap with the letter "E" stamped above the serial number on the barrel and below the serial number on the frame, trigger guard and back strap designating this revolver for engraving at the factory. The partial matching serial number "1783" is marked on the wedge, cylinder and cylinder pin. German silver blade front and hammer notch rear sights. The barrel and cylinder are blue with casehardened loading lever, frame, hammer and silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. The revolver is fitted with a smooth one-piece piano finish varnished walnut grip.

Fine as partially period refinished (barrel) with 70% of the blue finish remaining and the balance showing a smooth brown patina. The trigger guard and back strap retain 90% of the original attractive slightly age darkened silver plating with an aged patina on the exposed brass. The wedge has been numbered to match. The cylinder scene and a part of the barrel address are faint, otherwise the remaining markings and engraving are clear. The grip is very fine plus with 98% of the varnish remaining and showing some very light lower edge wear and a few minor dings. The action is excellent.
