This fair, original Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1878. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame and hammer are casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is varnished. The ejector rod has the early "bullseye" head and the hammer spur has elongated bordered knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the "Bold Block" address "COLT'S PT. F A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." in one line with a single line under the "o" in "Co". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Thee-Lines/Three-Date" patent markings. "45 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The back of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "710". A "P" and an "S" are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers. "B" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. "C" and "S" Colt inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing boss. The full serial number "44432" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "4432" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut

Condition: The revolver remains in fine condition with 40% of the blue and casehardened finish remaining. There is moderate finish wear on the contact points on the left side of the barrel and the edge of the ejector housing. Protected areas of the barrel and ejector housing retain most of the original high polish blue finish. The cylinder has a silver-gray patina with traces of blue finish in the flutes. The trigger guard and back strap have significant amounts of blue in protected areas. The back strap has a dark patina. The frame, hammer and loading lever retain approximately 50% of the original casehardened finish with strong case colors. The frame screws are in excellent condition with traces of niter blue finish. The grip is also in fair condition with some scattered, minor handling marks on the lower right side and the butt. All of the markings on the barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a fine, original, example of a 1878 production, blackpowder Colt Single Action Army revolver.
