This is an example of a very desirable Colt Model 1855 Military Rifle that was manufactured circa 1856 to 1864 with a total production of approximately 9,310. Only 500 were made in this configuration of 56 caliber with a 31 5/16 inch barrel. The top of the frame in the sighting groove is marked "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." and the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S PATENT" in a curve over "NOV. 24th, 1857". There is a small "K" stamped on the left rear of the trigger guard bow. The cylinder has the 1850 patent date marked in one of the flutes. The matching serial number is visible on the underside of the frame, lower tang and on the buttplate toe. Blade front sight and three leaf rear sight with "300" and "500" folding leafs and bayonet lug mounted on the right front of the barrel. Mounted with a full length walnut forearm and straight grip stock and carbine style iron buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod extension not included). There is a sling swivel mounted on the rear barrel band and on the stock. Comes with an iron cleaning rod and a correct "S&K" marked saber bayonet with brass handle. The opposite side of the ricasso is marked with an anchor flanked by a "D" and "C".

Fine. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with strong original blue finish on the frame. The cylinder is free of any flash pitting and the excellent nipples appear original to the rifle. The wood is very fine with some minor dents and dings, concentrated mainly on the stock. The action is fine. The markings are clear. The bayonet is fine with a dark mottled patina and some scattered minor pitting. The handle has an aged patina.
