Fine Clauberg Production Silver and Gold Embellished Sword, Inscribed to a Captain of the 18th Precinct in Post-Civil War New York City

Measuring 42 inches overall, the 34 inch double edged single fuller blade of this sword bears the Clauberg logo on the reverse ricasso beneath an "IRON PROOF" etching, with both sides embellished with a 16 1/2 inch panel of gold washed etched patriotic decoration, and the obverse in outfitted with a silver-enhanced panel inscribed "CAPT./W. H. Clinchy" in the middle of the gold segment. The guard is silver finished brass, with pierced-through scroll patterns in the arms, an icon of a Norse longship on the reverse, and a short languet on the obverse with an icon featuring the bust of a Greek hoplite, raised scroll bordering, and a clear, brilliant-cut stone (untested) in a spiral-cut setting. Wire wrapped ebony grip, with a silver collar at the top and a silver finished brass pommel in the form of a finely detailed knight's helm. The metal sheath is nickel finished overall, with the silver finished suspension bands and tip showing arrays of medieval arms and armor. Research shows that William Clinchy was born in New York City in 1844, adventuring West as a hunter and scout before returning home to enlist with the New York Police as a patrolman in 1865. Clinchy, described as a well read and self educated man, moved quickly up the ranks, making Captain by 1870 and spending much of his career in charge of the 18th Precinct. The overall profile of the sword is similar to the popular sidearms of American fraternities and lodges, though the proportions and weight are more in line with a functional blade than a purely ceremonial sword.

Very fine, with some minor spotting on the otherwise excellent blade, which retains over 95% of the original gold and silver decoration, with sharp detail in the etching and minor wear along the high edges. The silver on the hilt is well aged, with some bright edge wear and a few minor handling marks on the grip. A highly attractive Solingen production sword.
