Fine Civil War U.S. Contract Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver
Manufactured in 1862. The revolver has a three screw frame with cutouts for a shoulder stock, military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap with casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever and brass trigger guard. The one piece double cartouched grip is oil-finished walnut. The revolver components are stamped with ordnance sub-inspection marks that include: a double "TT" is marked on the upper left barrel lug, "D" on the barrel directly ahead of the cutout for the loading lever, "S" at the rear of the trigger guard bow, what appears to be an "R" stamped over a "B" on the right rear of the barrel and cylinder and an unrecognizable double mark on the cylinder. The Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of the script letters "PB" in a rectangle is stamped on the both lower sides of the grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-", "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left front of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas navy battle scene, and "COLT' PATENT NO. 8004 / PAT. SEPT 10th 1850". The matching serial number, is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap and the partial serial number "4008" is marked on the arbor pin and wedge. The Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was the primary handgun issued to the Federal cavalry during the Civil War.

Fine. The barrel retains 40% original finish mixed with smooth brownish gray patina. The cylinder has a smooth gray patina. The backstrap retains 75% original finish with a smooth gray on the heel and toe and speckled brown patina. The loading lever retains 50% bright original case colors with the balance a smooth silver gray. The frame retains approximately 60% original bright case colors. The hammer retains most of the bright case colors. The trigger guard has a light aged patina. The grip is very fine with a small chip on the left toe, a couple dings on the right toe, a few minor dings on the bottom of the right side and overall a few minor scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
