This is an example of a First Type rifle manufactured from 1859 to 1864. Slotted link on the right side of the frame, breech end of barrel recessed at each side allowing for removal of spent cartridges (correctly without an extractor) and iron frame and for end all forged integral. Blade and two leaf sights on a barrel marked "CAST STEEL . 5 (stamped over "F. WESSON") PATENT / OCT. 25, 1859" and "B. KITTREDGE & CO. / CINCINNATI, O." Kittredge & Co. was a well known Ohio sporting goods and arms dealers and agents for many American gun makers of the era, including Frank Wesson. Kittredge supplied Wesson carbines to state militia units during the Civil War. Smooth straight grip stock with crescent buttplate and sling swivels.

Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains 70% of the original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown finish with some scattered minor spotting (more prevalent on the buttplate). There is some minor pitting mostly on the frame, upper tang and trigger guard. A frame screw is missing. The stock is very fine with crisp raised oiled grain, some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
