an early unsigned oval vignette of three regimental officers being Lt. Colonel Charles L. Matthies (seated left) and Major William S. Robertson (seated right) with an unknown company grade officer standing middle. Accompanying the wartime view is a later 1870s civilian carte of the prosperous looking Doctor Robertson together with his GAR calling card imprinted, W.S. Robertson, M.D./Shelby Norman Post, No. 231/ Medical Director, Dept. of Iowa.

William Robertson (1831-1887) served in the field for a year before resigning in July 1862 to return to his medical practice. Prussian born Lt. Colonel Charles Leopold Matthies (1824-1868) advanced to colonel of the 5th Iowa in May 1862 and particularly distinguished himself at Iuka where the regiment suffered nearly 50% casualties. An obscure general officer, Matthies earned a star on November 29, 1862 and later commanded the 3rd Brigade of 3rd Division, 15th Corps, under Sherman during the Vicksburg campaign. The general was severely wounded at Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863 where he was struck by a bullet in the head. After returning to temporary duty, Matthies was incapacitated and resigned in May 1864. It is said that he was the first man in the United States to offer a military company to the government…January 9, 1861.
