Fine British Barnett Flintlock Indian Trade Musket

This is an example of a Northwest flintlock trade musket manufactured by the famous British company Barnett. The lock plate is marked "BARNETT/LONDON" behind the hammer with a "Fox/EB" proof clearly marked ahead of the hammer. The hammer and lock plate have a simple double line border. The upper left barrel flat has the following markings "Crown/GP" proof, "24", "Crown/V" proof, a flag, and "Crown/JEB" for John Edward Barnett who operated the Barnett organization from 1850-1875. The top barrel flat is also stamped with a fox proof mark. The part octagon barrel is equipped with a blade front sight and a period added notched lead rear sight. The ornate brass side plate is shaped like a mythical serpent/dragon known as the Hudson's Bay Fuke, a common ornament of 19th century trade muskets, and shows great detail. Three screws hold the side plate in place. The side plate, ramrod pipes and flat buttplate are brass. The full length stock is smooth with two ramrod pipes and a buttplate secured to the stock by five screws. Complete with a wooden ramrod.

Fine. The musket has a smooth crisp dark patina. The brass has a pleasant patina. The stock is also fine with a chip missing near the lock plate, and some scattered minor pressure dents. The edges around the lock plate are sharp. Mechanically fine. Overall a fine example of a trade gun by one on of the most prominent and desirable makers, Barnett.
