Fine Bowie Knife marked WoodHead and Hartley 36 Howard Street Sheffield with fancy etched blade, ivory scales, coffin shaped Hilt with rare ½ Horse, ½ Alligator, German Silver pommel circa 1848-1849 only. The blade showselaborate etching with American Eagle, Patriotic Slogans and California Gold at the diggings with 3 etched panels which portray American Bowie Knife, Eagle and California. The knife measures 13” overall with 8 5/8”blade. The blade is in near fine condition with most original polish with 85-95% original etching. Sharpened false edge with full tip, small nicks, minor aging. The Hilt is integral cast German silver with Germansilver pommel and shield shaped Escutcheon. Ivory grip scales are very good with a small chip repair (expertly replaced original piece that is pinned) almost unnoticed. A Beautiful original knife with rare addresswhich absolutely dates this knife to the Early California Gold Rush. Hugh Hayes Collection. Est. $10,000-20,000
