Fine 1913 Production U.S. Army Contract Colt Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a very nice example of an early U.S. Army Contract Colt Model 1911 semi-automatic pistol that was in a lot of 600 pistols that were shipped to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory in Dec 1913. This pistol still retains the early short, two-line/two-block slide markings with serifed Roman letters "PATENTED APR.20. 1897/SEPT.9.1902. DEC.19.1905. FEB.14. 911" followed by "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO./HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A.", with the uncircled Rampant Colt logo behind the slide serrations on the left side. The right side of the slide is marked "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY", and it is fitted with the early, narrow front sight with the round top rear sight. The forward section of the left side of the frame is stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" with the right side stamped with serial number, "No. 58191". The frame is stamped with the circled initials "WGP" for Major Walther Penfield the US Ordnance inspector. This pistol still retains the thick, early checkered thumb safety, first pattern slide stop without the plunger groove, the short horned grip safety, and the checkered wide hammer spur with the flat mainspring housing. It has the correct, all blued military contract barrel marked with a separate "P" and "H" proofmarks on top of the chamber, with a "J" proof on the left side of the lug. It is fitted with the correct early diamond checkered walnut grips. Complete with an early, half-tone blued magazine with the pinned base and the lanyard loop on the underside.

Manufacture: Colt
Model: 1911
BBL: 5 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 ACP
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 58191

Fine with 70% of the faded original blue finish overall with edge, high spot and handling wear overall with the front grip strap and mainspring housing having browned out. The grips are very good with nice distinctive checkering on both sides showing wear across the tops of the checkering mixed with minor handling marks. A very nice example of an early issue Colt Model 1911 showing honest original field use.
