Fine 1891 Production U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Ramrod Bayonet Rifle with Sling

This is a very fine example of a late production Model 1884 trapdoor rifle that includes the Model 1888 Round Ram-Rod sliding bayonet. This model was the final configuration of trapdoor rifles used by the U.S. Military until the fielding of the 1892 Krag rifle. The left rear section of the barrel is marked with the "V", "P" and Eagle head proofs in front of the receiver with a small "A" proof directly on top in front of the receiver and the top of the breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock is the correct late three click tumbler version that is marked with the American Eagle and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. This version has been fitted with the "new" one-piece trigger guard, and steel buttplate with the trapdoor compartment. It is fitted with the improved Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation and a pinned front sight blade. The stock is the correct full length version that is marked on the left wrist with a boxed script "SWP/1891" cartouche and behind the trigger guard it has single circled script "P" proof. The rifle is complete with an original ruptured shell extractor in the butt-trap compartment.

Manufacture: Springfield Armory U.S.
Model: 1888
BBL: 32 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 528259

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall on the metal parts with the breech end of the barrel and very front edge of the receiver, browning out and showing some very minor loss of finish where the rifle has been handled over the years. The breech block retains 80% of the original case color, just starting to fade a little on the firing pin hump. The stock is also in very fine condition with its nice original finish showing only some minor handling marks on the right side of the butt with a couple minor pressure dents in front of the lock plate and a small chip around the front edge of the trigger guard. It has a clear sharp cartouche and firing proof.
