Fight World Famine (Lot of 2) 28 x 19 WWI Fight World Famine
Fight World Famine (Lot of 2) 28"x 19" Artist: unsigned. Printed by the U.S. Department of Labor. This poster is an amazing work of art, though no artist signed his name to it. The poster depicts a soldier holding a pitchfork standing in several large piles of hay. From the sky, which is dark and black with clouds, buzzards are swooping down attacking the soldier. There are three distinct color areas of this poster, the red earth, the golden hay and soldier, and the black buzzards and sky. It is a wonderful piece of art, masterfully rendered and drawn. The recruiting party here is the Boys Working Reserve. The Boys Working Reserve was created in 1918, during World War I, as a division of the U.S. Employment Service, recruiting city youths around the age of 16 to supplement the depleted U.S. labor force, especially in the agriculture sector. Farm training camps were set up to help teens from the city adjust to the rural challenges of working on a farm. The program was discontinued the following year when the war ended. Because of this program's short lifespan, any memorabilia and posters mentioning them or recruiting for them are extremely desirable. This poster is a masterful depiction of how young men could help to maintain the food supply by picking up the tools of the trade on farms. Do not miss this amazing piece of art! <r<r Condition-Poster #1-Good; cockling from severe fold memory, deep horizontal crease through upper quadrants, small tears on upper and lower edges, dirt residue on lower edge. <r<r Poster #2-Fine; small piece missing from upper edge, normal wear and tear on edges from rolling/storage, dirt stains and residue on lower edge.
