DS in Spanish, one page, 9 x 13.75, March 4, 1960. Document pertaining to the explosion of La Coubre in Havana harbor, declaring a national state of mourning. In part (translated): "The explosion in the French-flagged 'La Coubre', which was carrying a shipment of ammunition for the Rebel Army, which occurred in the Port of Havana this afternoon, has produced a large number of innocent victims…A National Mourning is declared in the entire territory of the Republic for the term of 24 hours that will start from 12 midnight today." Signed at the conclusion by Fidel Castro as prime minister, and countersigned by two other officials. The blue seal and ribbon affixed to the lower right remain intact. In very good to fine condition, with tears and paper loss to the left edge.

The French freighter La Coubre, carrying 76 tons of grenades and munitions, exploded in Havana harbor on March 4, 1960, killing as many as 100 people and injuring many more. Fidel Castro charged that it was an act of sabotage by the United States, which denied any involvement. A memorial service was held at Havana's Colón Cemetery on March 5th, where Alberto Korda snapped the iconic image of Che Guevara known as 'Guerrillero Heroico.'
