After the success of the revolution, Castro assumed a number of important political roles in the newly formed government. He held his presidency from 1976 until February 2008 and, despite ill health, still serves as First Secretary of the Communist Part of Cuba.
Castro has survived hundreds of assassination attempts and is one of the most controversial political figures of recent years.
