Statesman (1812–1881) who is most famous for being one of the most colorful mayors in the history of New York City. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he recommended that New York secede and become a 'free city.' Partly-printed DS, one page, 7.25 x 3.5, March 1, 1856. Ornate pay order to the treasurer of New York City, paying Jacob L. Smith the sum of $19.50 for funeral expenses. Signed at the conclusion by Fernando Wood as mayor, and also by a clerk and comptroller. Encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication and grading holder, evaluating the autograph as "NM-MT 8." In fine condition.
