Fernandez Arman (1928-2005), Multiple, ‘L’Adieu’, pres. 1960s
Fernandez Arman is internationally renowned for his accumulations, in which he compiled sets of objects according to a certain principle in cases made of wood or Plexiglas. The present work bears the descriptive title "L'Adieu" and was probably made in the 1960s. Interestingly, the mentioned principle of accumulating objects has been applied here in a slightly different way: Instead of presenting a mass of objects in a box, Arman printed the outlines of a two-parted female statuette repeatedly with purple acrylic paint on the white primed chipboard. The use of cut or even destroyed figures and objects was a very common practice by the artist.

The work is in good condition considering its age. There are tiny losses of paint next to the head and around the base of the left figure. The white paint surface has been retouched at the height of the right figure’s breast and base. There is a further small area of retouching in the center of the printed figures; closer inspection reveals a fine single hair stuck in the surface of paint. It is signed with pencil on the chipboard lower right ‘arman’ and numbered with pencil lower left ‘3/90’. The object measures 75.5 x 108.5 x 16.5 cm (height x width x depth).

Arman (1928-2005)

Arman, actually Armand Pierre Fernandez, first studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, before studying archeology and oriental art at the École du Louvre in Paris. At this time he created already paintings inspired by surrealism. The artist became interested in African art and was fascinated by the works of Serge Poliakoff, Jackson Pollock and Kurt Schwitters. In 1958, he took on the alias ‘Arman’ and began to experiment with his first accumulations. An exhibition in 1960, for which the artist had the gallery filled with waste, finally lead to his sudden worldwide fame. In the following years, the artist realized numerous performances and installations. Works by Arman are held at the MoMA in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington and the Tate Gallery in London.
