Fernand Roda, Painting, Leaves in Green and Red, 2004
Fernand Roda is addressing the theme of ‘nature’ in a very diverse, questioning form. The present piece shows moist green bush, interlaced with bright red leaves. As the artist did not indicate the natural environment of the plant, the painting receives a very individual character beyond simply reflecting the given objects. And yet the longer we watch the work, the more we discover the regular shaped pattern of oval forms and the complementary colors green and red. Regarding Immanuel Kant, whose philosophy has a great impact on the artist since the 1990s, we may remember Kant’s brief remark: ‘Art can only be called beautiful if we are conscious of it as Art while yet it looks like Nature.’ (Immanuel Kant)

The painting is in a good overall condition with only minor traces of wear. Accordingly, there is some color flaking to the lower edges. The work is signed and dated ‘Roda 04’ at the lower right. The stretcher measures 50 x 50 cm.

Fernand Roda (b. 1951)

Fernand Roda was born in Luxembourg in 1951. He studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, his fellow students included artists like Jörg Immendorf and Blinky Palermo. In 1975, he was a master student of Joseph Beuys. In the 80s, Roda initially devoted himself to large-scale figurative painting. In his works, he primarily deals with the theme of nature. His ‘nature images’, which he conceives in series, occupy a liminal space between abstraction and figuration. Today Fernand Roda lives and works in Dusseldorf.
