French diplomat (1805–1894) who spearheaded the project to build the Suez Canal. Original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo by Mora of New York, signed at the bottom of the image in black ink, “Ferd. de Lesseps, New York, 1st Avril, 1880.” In very good condition, with moderate scattered foxing and toning to the image, some surface loss to the lower right corner of the mount, and various pencil notations to reverse.
