Female (First National, 1933). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Three directors took a turn on this film: William Dieterle began the film but grew ill; William A. Wellman presided over 17 scenes, but had to leave to fulfill his directorial obligation on "College Coach," Michael Curtiz finished the film and received directorial credit. Of course, the studio had three opportunities to hire a female director for a film titled "Female" but being 1933, few female filmmakers, if any, existed. At least the story seemed relatively progressive. Alison (Ruth Chatterton) is owner and successful manager of an automobile factory. She relates well to her employees, but unfortunately she extends the goodwill to her male employees from the factory floor to the bedroom. Inventor Jim Thorne (George Brent) refuses her offers, which leaves the choice -- fire him or marry him. Alison may not be the most flattering representative for the gender, but this love 'em and leave 'em policy had been the domain of men. Chatterton's steely gaze and clenched fist in a room full of men perfectly captures the spirit of the film. The borders are clean, except for a stain that runs along the right edge. Very Fine.
