Ilongot or Gaddang tribe, Northern Luzon, Philippines: an over-the-shoulder or over-the-head ceremonial costume worn by the the elite women of the tribe. Multi-colored finely woven cloth with white seed beads and measuring 47" from beaded top to bottom of the cloth as it hung. Early 20th C., with a fringe added circa 1950 by a later generation. SEE: Photo on page 232 of the UCLA Museum Catalog noted above, where they show a different tribal group using a similar garment over the shoulder. Upper classes only. Rare in Philippine collections and very few in Western museums.
