Super quality and rarity are found together in this medicine Bulul. Used in cases of child sickness and mother danger in childbirth, the spirit of this Bulul would have been "controlled" by a female Shamaness specializing in such matters. The same woman would have supervised all aspects of a birth and early caring for the mother and baby. The large size of the Bulul - and careful carving from a single block of wood - indicate the importance placed on this sculpture (which had to have been commissioned by an elite family of Shamans - as a heirarchy of Bulul sizes exists to this day). Realistic female body carving and the characteristic face tell us it was made by the most important and presdigious carver named Tagiling of the Kababuyan group of the Hingyan sub-tribe of the Ifugao (SEE: The UCLA Catalog, Pages 197 and 199 - where several of his masterpieces are shown. And this piece exceeds every one of them!). Possibly the most important Bulul I have ever touched - and to come on the market in decades. 27-1/2" tall, early 20th C., and the previous owner or head of the Shaman family was a Kababuyan named Ngayo-ngay. A wonderful investment in cultural history and financial or exhibition possibilities.
