Confederate brigadier general (1812–1862) who was killed in action at the Battle of Mill Springs, making him the first Confederate general to die in the Western Theater. ALS signed “F. K. Zollicoffer,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, June 2, 1858. Letter to R. J. Meigs, Esquire, written while serving as a US Congressman from Tennessee. In part: “Knowing that it was not possible to procure action upon the proposition to give the franking privilege to State Libraries at this late day in the session, I have not attempted it. I will try it in the next – though, with the disposition manifested to abolish all franking privileges, I fear the effort will be fruitless.” Intersecting folds, some scattered toning, thin mounting strip along left edge, and a previous owner’s name in pencil on blank area of the reverse, otherwise fine condition.
