ALS in German, one page, 3.5 x 4.5, no date but circa May 1832. Untranslated letter to Mme. Moscheles, wife of the pianist Ignaz Moscheles. Mendelssohn asks for a meeting and writes that his old teacher has died. Light toning and a small block of show-through from tape to the top edge, otherwise fine condition. Mendelssohn was in London at this time for the first performance of his concert overture The Hebrides, a piece inspired by his 1830 visit to Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa, located in the Hebrides archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. The overture has become part of the standard orchestral repertoire. Ignaz Moscheles was a close friend and mentor of Mendelssohn who was instrumental in popularizing his work in Great Britain. A wonderful association piece by the scarce and sought-after composer.
