Proportionally, this peice is tall and slender - very desirable in an American chest on chest of the period. Many chests of this form are in the 72 to 73 inch range in terms of height. This chest measures 75 3/4 in height giving it a comanding presence yet measures only 18 1/2" deep and 38 1/2" wide. Constructed of maple with tiger figuring to the sides and chestnut secondaries throughout. A great example of a period Federal chest having five graduated drawers under a bold cornice molding resting on a conforming case of four graduated drawers above a wonderfully carved bracket base. Note the attention to detail on the base as well as the carved drop to its center. Brass pulls appear to be original to the peice and are period Federal brass eagle pulls. The finish is an old refinish as there appear to be traces of an old red wash inside the case. There have been no structural restorations to this piece. Dates to circa 1800. Rhode Island.
