Fascinating framed and matted rifle cartridge, headstamped “U.M.C. 6mm U.S.N.” with note on George L. Babcock, General Supply Depot letterhead (Key West, Fla.) dated April 19, 1898 that states “This is tocertify that these shells presented to Mr. G.L. Babcock were recovered from the US.S. Maine while the USS Tern was lying in Havana harbor. Viz one Six pounder shell, 2 one pounder shells, 6 rifle cartridges. David C.Blake, Mat Armo USS Tern” with witness signatures and Notarized by Wm. T Archer, Monroe County, Fla with penciled signature at bottom “J.N. Ritchie, Lebanon, Ind.” Consignor indicates this piece had been inhis family beginning with his grandparents when they were young and that his grandmother told him that a friend of the family had obtained several similar cartridges from those involved in recovering the ship andgave this cartridge and authentication to his grandfather. A great piece of American history related to the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine on February 15, 1898, in Havana Harbor, leading to the Spanish-American War and the
