Farallon Islands located 27 miles from San Francisco Bay Entrance and considered part of the city. Photo (possibly 1860's) shows the So. Farallon Island landing cove w. crane for lifting boats initially for the light house (built in 1855) crews. The Islands have always been a wildlife refuge of seals and birds (Murres) and was named officially by Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. Early history was known for the "EggWars", an armed conflict between the "eggers" and the lighthouse keepers. Demand for eggs in San Fran created a industry of harvesting the bird eggs to the city. When first started they harvested 900,000 eggs per year dropping down to 300,000 20 years later. Eggs sold fo $1 a piece then. The Feds removed the egg company in 1881. These building have been replaced with residences for the lighthouse keepers. San Francisco California Ken Prag Collection
