Fantastic carved ivory display stein measuring approx. 15-1/2” in height and 7” across the base with ornate silver and gold gilded brass mounts showing scenes of Hannibal crossing the Alps. Circa approx. 19th century or earlier. The body of the stein is carved in high relief and show Hannibal surrounded by warriors in attendance with full arms and armor in 3-dimensional high relief and also elephants are featured in the carving which is a famous historical scene. The quality of the carving is superb and beautifully accomplished with finest attention to details and carved away from the base leaving the figures in full relief. The carving shows an even patina and there are no major areas of damage to the center portion, just some minute cracking and normal aging with a tremendous amount of work and detail. The top of the stein is surmounted by a warrior waving his cape, holding a sword, of which the blade is missing. The mounts show stands of arms and portraits of warriors in relief. The handle is full figure of a warrior with helmet and beard. The brass mounts show rich traces of silver and gold gilt in their patina. A truly superb example of ivory carving which was considered the best in Robert Elz's famous Southern California dealer’s collection who collected it in the 1970’s. Est: $7,000 - $14,000
