both fully equipped privates, unidentified, but certainly brothers said to have originated in Kentucky. These fresh-faced early Federal recruits (the right hand subject with tinted high cheeks appears disturbingly feminine) wear regulation four button sack coats showing eagle buttons and newly issued accoutrements, including the M1858 canteen with tin cup attached and empty white cotton haversack. The rakish headgear with plume — a lesser version of the Hardee hat — adds character and suggests an early war time frame. Both boys are armed with the common M1816 musket and M1849 Colt Pocket Pistol with 5" barrel. Each carries a commercially made English Bowie knife inset with identical hilt decoration that appears to be a heart over a coffin, probably in German silver. The custom made narrow waist belts are uncommon accoutrements typically associated with antebellum militia riflemen. One belt is fitted with a simple roller buckle, the other a rectangular (eagle?) plate. An old ink identification glued to the back of the sixth plate on the left reads, Brother of Samuel Graham. It is impossible to identify a state or unit based upon the uniform or name. HDS shows 112 Federals named Samuel Graham. A fine pair of Bowie toting, fully armed Federals.

Condition: Both plates are EXC., flawless with strong clarity; housed in a generic gutta percha case with floral and leave motif.
