Fanning, Edmund. VOYAGES TO THE SOUTH SEAS, INDI
Fanning, Edmund. VOYAGES TO THE SOUTH SEAS, INDIAN AND PACIFIC OCEANS, CHINA SEA, NORTH-WEST COAST ...... WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE NEW DISCOVERIES MADE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE BETWEEN THE YEARS 1830-1837......... New York: Wm. H. Vermilye 1838 Fourth edition xii,324pp. Frontis plate of "Attack and Massacre of the crew of ship Tonquin by Savages of the N.W. Coast". by N. Currier. Original cloth, restored, scattered light foxing, but a very good copy. Inscribed on the front endpaper in pencil "Presented by the author as a small friendly token of regard." The inscription is faint but entirely legible.

Rosove 120.A3; Howes F-28; Sabin 23781; Not in Streeter, Hill or Spence. Although sometimes decsribed as just a later edition of Fanning's 1833 book, this is in fact an entirely separate narrative. Four "editions" - really just reprintings - were published, all in 1838. Part VI is "A Description of the New South Shetland Isles, by James Eights .... naturalist .... of Brigs Seraoh and Annawan, under the command of Captain B. Pendleton, and N. B. Palmer .... in the years 1829 and 1830." This is the work from which the 1924 Marine Research Society's reprint was taken. Also includes a description of the destruction of Astor's ship "Tonquin" at Nootka Sound, as well as other voyages and adventures in the Pacific and Australia. Despite the four "editions", a very scarce book in any of them!
