As such, they are regularly adorned so that their value is asserted and enhanced. Though rare, several known Fang harps have a full head at top, as in this example. This serves as an animating feature. When the instrument was actually in use, with its stringing system in place, it would have appeared as though the sound was being voiced through the head. The wood parts are sound but abraded, the hide has a number of losses and overall abrasion, and some eye pigment is missing.

Exhibited: The Herbert Baker Collection. The Museum of Primitive Art, New York,1969.

Published: The Herbert Baker Collection. New York: The Museum of Primitive Art, 1969, ill. p.11, no.85; p.42, cat. no.85.

Provenance: Herbert Baker Collection
James Willis, San Francisco

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
