Fall 2013 Western Art Auction

Auction Details

About 400 works of art will be offered in Altermann Galleries Sunday, November 17th auction at the galleries auction facility, 345 Camino del Monte Sol in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The offerings will include a large number of past and present Masters of the American West. One of the key pieces in the past Master’s category is a 21 by 18 inches oil painting by Frank Tenney Johnson entitled Cowboy on Horseback at Night (estimate; $200,000 to $300,000), a quintessential moonlight setting of a cowboy on horseback. Another significant offering is a 30 by 25 inches Northwest mountainscape painting by Albert Bierstadt described as Puyallup River Valley and Mount Rainier (estimate; $250,000 to $350,000). The painting at one time was in the estate of Robert Shelton of the King Ranch family.

One of the most in-demand paintings in the sale will be Charlie Dye’s Old Blue in the Lead (estimate; $70,000 to $90,000) that has remained in the same collection since it was commissioned in the 1960s. Also, in the sale will be two other major Dyes from the same collection.
