Set of four checks addressed to key Comstock players and all signed by James Fair. The Big Four (Mackay, Fair, Flood, and O'Brien) took control of the Comstock though control of the mills. 1) June 18, 1875. Bacon Mill. To Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Orange Scott type D, Franklin revenue imprinted stamp. 2) October 31, 1872 (Nevada Day!). Woodworth Mill. To Bacon Mill. Endorsed on back by A. B. Thompson. Scott type E orange two cent imprinted revenue stamp. 3) September 2, 1872. Mariposa Mill. To Fulton Foundry (held the record for largest single casting at one time). Endorsed on back by one of the owners - McCone. Scott type E orange two cent imprinted revenue stamp. 4) March 2, 1870. Trench Mill. To Jake Winters. According to the Harry Hawkins oral history at the UNR Knowledge Center, the "Old Jake Winters" silver mine produced quite a lot of silver. Orange Nevada 2 cent and orange U. S. Internal Revenue 2 cent stamps attached. Great collection with interesting histories!
