RN-B16a. Mariposa Mill Co./Agency of the Bank of California. Blue and brown on crème. The Nevada state revenue stamp is slightly left of center over the federal imprint. The year Nevada joined the union (1864) a case had been filed regarding James Fair's (and others) Bonanza mine properties. It was assumed that jurors and even the judge were paid off by the big bonanza kings (including Fair). After receiving affidavits from several jurors declaring this so, the plaintiff Cinc Barnes contacted Fair and demanded $200,000 cash. Fair attempted to "grab the documents, but Barnes covered him with a six-shooter, and Fair 'came through' with the money [Ref: Davis, History of Nevada, 1913, pp. 396-397].
