Factory engraved Colt SAA revolver, .45 cal., 5-1/2” barrel, nickel finish, raised carved steerhead pearl grips, #162846 with factory letter confirming caliber, barrel length, finish, engraving and grips, shipped to Thorsen & Cassady, address unavailable, on August 10, 1895, 1 gun in shipment. This gun shows finer than the usual coverage of factory engraving including rope loops around the cylinder stops and extra treatment to the backstrap, loading gate and ejector housing; metal surfaces show a grey patina with scattered erosion and general pinprick pitting with some heavier pitting on some areas of the cylinder; at one time in the past, the left side of the barrel was cleaned and the “45 Colt” marking and line of scroll engraving on that side appears to have been carefully re-cut along with the one scroll on the right side of the muzzle, otherwise all other engraving remains original; the ejector rod actuator is an old replacement, the markings and action are good, the bore is also good and the raised carved pearl grips are thick, iridescent and beautifully accomplished; there has been an old repair to the top corner of the right grip and a similar repair to the lower front toe of the left grip but otherwise the grips are classic Western in appearance and style. In 1895, this gun would have been a very expensive purchase given the degree of engraving and the raised carved grips. The fact that it was a one gun shipment implies a special occasion.
