Factory Inscribed Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Lever Action Rifle

First year production, special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle. The left side of the receiver is engraved with the inscription "Charles M. Lea/Philadelphia/Pa.". Charles Matthew Lea was the son of Henry Charles Lea. Consigner's notes indicate Charles Lea operated a medical book publishing company in Philadelphia between 1885 and 1915. This rifle has a special order half-round/half-octagon barrel, half magazine, deluxe fancy grain 3X walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with Style H checkering, Winchester Express front sight with colored bead and folding combination tang sight. A standard sporting style buckhorn rear sight is mounted on the barrel. The barrel, bolt and loading gate are blue and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm have a high polish piano finish and the pistol grip cap has an ebony inlay. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The two line 1884/1885 patent markings are located on the lower tang just behind the trigger and the serial number "5343" is stamped in script numerals behind the lower tang screw. The left side of the lower tang beneath the stock is stamped "XXX" followed by the assembly number "292".

Excellent. The barrel has nearly 95% of the original blue finish with some very minor edge wear and some thinning on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and receiver. The bolt and loading gate retain most of the bright blue finish. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are vivid and retains 75%. The casehardened finish on the bottom of the receiver, receiver bridge and bottom of the lever have faded to a smooth silver-gray patina. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a mottled gray patina with a few spots of age discoloration. The highly figured 3x deluxe walnut stock and forearm rates excellent plus with only minor collector type handling marks. This is an outstanding example of a rare, first year production, factory inscribed, special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Lever Action Rifle.
