Factory Engraved and Inscribed Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1887. The barrel and frame are decorated with scroll pattern engraving. The cylinder is engraved with alternating scrolls and sunbursts on the flutes with a dot and zigzag pattern on the rear of the cylinder. The ejector housing, top strap, back strap and trigger guard are engraved in a dot and zig-zag pattern. There is a shell design on the loading gate, recoil shield and top of the back strap. The back strap is inscribed "E.A.Holliman" in a zigzag and dot panel. Reportedly Holliman was a Texas Ranger. The top of the barrel is engraved with a simple line and dot design and marked with the two line address. The left side of the frame is marked with the three line, three patent dates, and the matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The caliber designation, "45 CAL" is located on the upper left front trigger guard bow. The frame inspector's "S" mark is stamped on the inside of the hammer well above the firing pin hole. A small "S" and "H" are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The loading gate is numbered "649". The name "F.BUTCHER" is stamped on both sides on the back strap under the grip (significance unknown). Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, all nickel finish and fitted with a one-piece walnut grip. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, nickel finish, wood grip, factory engraving and that it was shipped as 1 to E.E. Menges in Kansas City, Mo. On April 14, 1887.

Good as re-chromed with 98% finish remaining, showing some wear on the muzzle. There is a light cylinder drag line and overall some light scratches and dings. The grip is good with 40% original varnish remaining and showing a three small notches cut into the bottom left side, moderate wear on the lower edges, and chips on both toes and the left heel. The back strap inscription is faint but legible, and the remaining markings and engraving are clear. The action is fine. A very scarce factory engraved Colt Single Action with Texas Ranger inscription.
