Volcanic lever action carbine manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., circa 1856-1857 before the company was reorganized by Oliver Winchester in April 1857. The carbine has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The hammer and lever have a casehardened finish and the stock is oil-finished walnut. A nickel-silver front sight is mounted on the barrel and a niter blue screw-adjustable rear sight is located on the top of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. Feb. 14. 1854" in three lines. The serial number, "3003", is stamped on the lower left receiver tang. The serial number indicates that this was one of the last firearms manufactured by the Volcanic Arms Co. before the company was reorganized as the new Haven Arms Co.. The top and sides of the receiver and the heel of the buttplate are decorated with the large open scroll pattern engraving found on factory engraved Volcanic Repeating Arms and New Haven Arms Co., firearms. The engraving is very similar to the Volcanic engraving illustrated on pages 6 and 7 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L, Wilson. Factory engraved Volcanic Arms Co., firearms are rare and desirable.
