Volcanic Carbine manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. c. 1857. This Deluxe Carbine has a factory engraved, silver-plated brass receiver. The open, scroll engraving has panels with scalloped borders and is typical of the factory engraving found on New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic rifles, carbines and pistols. The carbine has a blued octagon barrel with integral magazine. The barrel is fitted with a similar nickel silver front sight blade similar to the type used on Henry rifles. A screw adjustable dove-tail mounted rear sight is located on the carbine receiver. The hammer and lever have a case hardened finish and the straight grain walnut stock has a high polish 'piano' finish. The top of the barrel is stamped with the post April 15, 1857, New Haven Arms Co. legend : "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB 14.1854" in one line. The serial number, "43" is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang, on the shanks of the hand-fitted stock, the buttplate screws, and on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Volcanic rifles, carbines and pistols are scarce and historically significant firearms. Volcanic firearms combined the self-contained cartridge, integral, spring loaded, magazine and lever action which paved the way for the successful Henry and Winchester rifles and introduced Oliver Winchester to firearms manufacturing.
BBL: 16 1/2 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 41 Volcanic
Finish: blue/silver plated
Grips:
Serial Number: 43
Condition: Very good plus. The barrel has a pleasing brown patina with sharp edges and clear markings. There is scattered light pitting near the muzzle and a few minor patches of surface rust along the length of the barrel and magazine. The brass receiver and buttplate havean attractive untouched, patina with traces of silver-plated finish in protected areas. The receiver is smooth and the sideplate joints are perfect. The engraving of the receiver and buttplate is deep and crisp. The hammer and lever retain about 50% of the case colors with some age spotting on contact points. The very fine original stock retains at least 75% of the high polish 'piano' finish but has a number of light scratches and handling marks; primarily on the left side. The rear sight is an incorrect dimension replacement. This is a solid example of a scarce factory engraved, New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Carbine.
