Factory Engraved Merwin Hulbert & Co. 3rd Model Frontier Army Single Action Revolver with Ivory Grip
This is an example of a factory engraved Merwin Hulbert 3th Model Single Action Frontier Army Revolver. These revolvers were manufactured in the 1870s and this revolver has the distinctive 3rd Model round barrel with top strap, fluted cylinder and square butt with lanyard ring. Visible on top of the barrel is "15, 74, AUG 3, 75 JULY 11, 76, APR. 17, 77 Pats Mar 6, 77"". The left side of the frame below the cylinder is marked with the two-line caliber designation: "CALIBRE / WINCHESTER 1873" (the designation for 44-40 caliber), and the serial number "21819" is stamped on the bottom of the butt behind the lanyard loop and "606" is stamped on the rear face of the barrel lug and on the rear face of the cylinder. The revolver is nickel finished with a casehardened hammer, trigger, trigger guard and barrel assembly release button and features the distinctive factory punch dot engraving with a deer on the left side plate in a round panel. The revolver is fitted with smooth two piece ivory grips.
BBL: 7 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40 WCF
Finish: nickel
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 21819
Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina with strong original; nickel in protected areas, of the bottom of the barrel, cylinder flutes and recoil shields. There is a small amount of minor pitting on the muzzle end of the barrel, which also shows signs of cleaning. The shrunken undersize grips are fair with a large chip on the right heel, numerous minor age cracks and a pleasant caramel patina. Some markings are not visible, those that are are clear and the engraving is clear. The barrel releases roughly, the cylinder does not lock (and spins freely) but the action functions properly. A colorful Old West revolver!
